Gleaves Descendants in the 1850-1930 Census

Completed reports:

Matthew Gleaves, Sr

This is a two generation report to set the stage for the following reports.

Thomas Gleaves

Author notes from the above project: One credible source seems to express doubt as to whether Nancy Ann Gleaves, the younger listed child for Thomas Gleaves and Sarah Smith was actually his child.  Upon reviewing the Will Transcript for Thomas Gleaves, I see no doubt to the fact that he had a child named Nancy Ann Cherry.  Also, it seems "established" that Thomas Gleaves who married Sarah Smith had a middle initial "H".  I have found no record to substantiate this and doubt he had this or any middle initial.  Do you think he had the middle initial "H"?  What is the primary documentary source to support this belief?

As the size of the report for the whole family was so large, it is presented here in detail by child.

Project Author:  Bob Allen

Bob is a descendant of Sarah Gleaves & Nathan Allen and has graciously shared his Allen information with our web site.

He writes: I am doing my Gleaves descendancy project for my own enjoyment and eventually to help as many Gleaves researchers as I can.  My intent is to send a copy of the finished product to the Gleaves Family Organization for publication as you see fit.  My Ged Com is also posted at Ancestry.com and I will continue to update it so it will eventually contain the complete research.

He further adds: I am interested in receiving corrections to any errors I have made.  I am interested in receiving more detail to the vital information for the people I have included in the study.  I have included all of my information in the report and I have no other information to offer on these families.

Explanation for the methodology of this project:

This project uses my old records and recent interest sources, most notable the census.

The first trick when working with a family with the starting person beyond child bearing years in the 1850 census is to start with enough information about the family to to know who to be searching for in the 1850 census.  I have most of the needed information for the Gleaves family to know who to start seaching for in the 1850 census.  Obviously, there are some females who I lose because I do not know who they married and there are no sources of information on the family I can find on the internet.  I am limiting myself to sources available on the internet when dealing with lines collateral to my direct line.

I am using census information, other family trees on the internet, country records available on the internet and through ancestry.com, and WWI Draft Registration Cards mainly.

Regarding birth, marriage, and death dates and place.  I enter the information in the main genealogy program and not in the notes.  If I find exact dates, I enter them.  If I get a month and year of birth from the 1900 census, I enter that unless there is a conflict in which case I either make a choice between sources or enter a range.  If I do not have an exact date of birth, I use the year based on age in the census and sometimes enter a range if the year is different in different censuses.  I do not note my sources for the exact birth, marraige and death dates.  If I make a mistake, I am hoping others with correct information more familiar with the line will use the Contact Page to send corrections.

Along with each person in my Ged Com is a section for notes.  As I go through the censuses, I make an abstract of the information I deem relevant.  It is not everything, but anybody who is interested in everything will know where to find the family and look for themself.

For example.  Let's look at James Robertson Gleaves and Elizaeth Wood.  Here are my notes on them:
