Wythe Va  8th of Sept. 1838

Dear Samuel
Yours of the 6th inst has come to hand, in which you are asking for Ten Dollars to pay for your Tuition for five months, I suppose commencing on the 1st of this month, which you will find here enclosed, pay it over to the proper person & take a receit for the same.
I should have sent the money with you but I thought that as I had advanced twenty Dollars at the time that I entered you as a Scholar that that amount was certainly sufficient for seven & one half months tuition & to pay a part of your Board & the balance I intended to settle at the expiration of this Session,  you only went to school about 2 ½ months in the last session which would only have cost five Dollars leaving fifteen out of which I intended Ten Dollars to have gone towards paying for your Tuition for the five months to come and the balance towards paying your board.
I seen Mr. Gannaways bill handed to you by himself, but believing that he had made a mistake in making it out, I thought that I would let it stand until

I could see him & we could then correct the mistake.
You will please show this to Mr Gannaway & request of him to give me a full explanation of the whole matter, as there seems to be something quite mysterious to me in this business.
We are all well & Wythe got home safe.

Your father
