Transcriber Notes

This document is confusing in that this is not an actual lawsuit but may just be a procedural document filed with the court prior to any action.  Lawsuits, even in this time, provided more detail.  It appears that a fee of 40 cents was involved here.

It appears to have been filed by J.P. Mathews on behalf of the children.  Thomas Harvey Gleaves, the eldest of the children would have just turned 19 the month before.  The children and their mother, Margaret “Peggy” Finley Gleaves had been living in Christian County, Kentucky but we know they moved to Lafayette County, Missouri sometime between 1818 and 1825.

The will of William Gleaves Sr. had a specific provision mentioning the three children.  “To my daughter-in-law Margaret Gleaves formerly wife of William Gleaves dead. I deviseth the sum of one hundred dollars for the use of hir children (to-wit) Thomas H. Gleaves, Polly Gleaves, and Eliza Gleaves”.  It is unclear as to why the children filed rather than Peggy, as she was still alive at this time.

The document provides an approximate date of death for William Gleaves Jr. as February, 1811.
