WILL OF WILLIAM GLEAVES, DECEASED
(Wythe County Will Book 2, page 297)

IN THE NAME OF GOD.
I William Gleaves make my will.
I allow my affectionate wife Elizabeth to live in the house .where we now reside during his life and be well supported from the proceeds of the plantation (as I shall hereafter direct) I devise to my wife to dispose of as she thinks proper my two negro wonen namely Lett & Winny. I also give to my wife all the ballance of my negroes during during her nataral life, But she may dispose of them provid she disposes of them as I shall hereafter direct. I also devise to her to dispose of as she thinks proper one third part of all the money that may be on hand & also one third part of all the money that may be due on bonds also one horse saddle & bridle his choice of all my horses & two beds and furniture his choice & appearval.
I bequeath to my wife Elizabeth the Ballance of my household & kitchen furniature during her natural life, & when it is please heaven to call hir hence the property given her except such as is at hir disposial shall be divided as hereafter directe
To my Daughter Nancy Gleaves, I devise my negroe girl Patt & hir four ohildren (to-wit) Levina, Dicy, Eliza & Harden with the increase of the females also one more called Trap with hir increase &: hir saddle & bridle two beds &: all their furniture ten head of cattle (to-wit) five cows five head of young cattle ten head of sheep though she is not to receive the

cattle and sheep during hir single life and not to keep no more then two head of horses at one time.
To my son James T. Gleaves I bequest the land whereon I now live with the adjoing (to-wit) the survey which lies on the south side also the old Hobbs place with the survey adjoing it also one hundred and fifty acres of land which Capt. James Newell is to make me a title to also a tract of land called Wm. Turner's place and also the crab Orchard tract of land by paying my daughters Elizabeth Ramsey Margaret Tuck (Turk) Esther Findley (Finley) Sally Allen and Nancy Gleaves twenty five pound each and he is to support his mother during life also his sister Nancy Gleaves during hir single life hir not being allowed to keep more than four negroes ay one time at his expense. I also allow him four horses his choice of the horses that may be on the place accept those I have already disposed of and shall hereafter dispose of. I also allow him one wagon and gears and all the farming utensils with what Plank there may be on hand or anything that may have been purchased for the use of the farm. I also devise to my son James T. Gleaves two negroes namely Sampson and Rachel one good bed and furniture ten head of sheep and all my hogs. To my son Thomas Gleaves I bequeath my negro boy Plim. To my daughter Polly Porter I bequeath the sum of one hundred dollars for hir use arising from the proceeds of the sale. To my daughter-in-law Margaret Gleaves formerly wife of William Gleaves dead. of one hundred dollars for the use of hir children (to-wit) Thomas H. Gleaves, Polly Gleaves, and Eliza Gleaves.
To my daughter Elizabeth Ramsey I bequeath the sum of thirty three dollars and thirty three cents.
To my son Abraham (Absalom) Gleaves I bequeath my negroe girl Sharlotte with hir increase.
To my daughter Margaret Tuck I bequeath my negroe Girl Kissey.
To my daughter Esther Findley I bequeath my negroe Malinda.
To my daughter Sally Allen I bequeath my negroe Girl Sarah.
I allow to my son James T. Gleaves at the death of his mother my two negroe men namely Peter and David for his use.
I allow my personal property not otherwise disposed of to be sold at a credit of twelve months and the money arising therefrom together with the money on hand and the proceeds of the bonds due to be equally divided between Thomas Gleaves Abraham Gleaves Margaret Tuck Esther Findley Sally Allen James T. Gleaves and Nancy Gleaves.
I wish all the grain or forage on hand or in groth not to be disposed of at the sale but to go to the support of the family.
To my wife Elizabeth in lieu of the horse before mentioned, I bequeath my yellow mare called Jenny with hir increase.
