Receit for
Malinda
Malinda was bequeathed to Asa Finley's wife, Esther by her father William Gleaves Sr. in his 1820 will. The William Gleaves Bible lists Emily as being born February 7, 1822 in Wythe County, Virginia.
In May of 1823, two months before this document was signed, Asa drew up a power of attorney naming his nephew Thomas Harvey Gleaves to represent him in William's estate. Thomas was the son of Asa's sister Margaret Finley Gleaves and William Gleaves, Jr. Both families had moved to Missouri around 1820 so it is unclear if Thomas returned to Virginia to handle this matter or used the mails.
James T. Gleaves kept all of his correspondence as well as the envelopes they came in. Given the fact that there is no envelope, we suspect Thomas made the trip back east.
It is unclear if either Malinda or Emily ever left Virginia to join them there.
This is a case of a Finley brother and sister, Asa and Margaret, marrying a Gleaves sister and brother, Esther and William, Jr. William, Jr was dead at the time of this transaction, having died April 17, 1811 in Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky, before the families moved to Missouri. William's wife, Margaret, later married James Holman in 1828 in Ray County, Missouri.
