Dr Sir
You will confer upon me a great favour if you will obtain a coppy of a Pattent in the name of Stephen Gosse Land then in the County of Montgomery now in Wythe, containing (55) fifty five acres pattent issued the 15th day of October 1792. It is the land of Jacob Gosse adjoining the land which I purchased of Doctor Stanger. Mr Jacob Gosse has the original Patent, but it is so much defaced by getting wet that it is impossible to make out the courses. You will please get a coppy as soon as you can, and send it on to me directed to Speedwell post office. The expenses
charges etc I will pay you as soon as you return home, no news here worth your attention.
Your friend
John P. Nye
Dr. Stanger is Dr. John Stanger, a Lutheran minister.
John P. Nye appears to live in the Speedwell area at the time of this letter. Later the Nye family lived just east of Wytheville. Nye Lithia Springs was on the eastern edge of town and the old Nye house stood nearby even into recent times.
