Respected Sir
I have availed myself of the present
opportunity of addressing you a few lines which I
have no doubt is entirely unexpected by you
but from the friendship that existed with us before

to make of you which is this I am about to engage
in business of importance to me and it hath
become necessary for me to produce Certificates
of my Standing as a man of honour to shew whether
I am a man of Veracity or not or whether I am
a man in whom Confidence can be placed
Sir I believe that you have known me from my
Cradle I wish you to give your Certificate
respecting me and likewise procure the Certificates

Transcriber Notes

This letter was hand carried by “Mr. Cregger” from Vicksburg, Miss., to Wythe County.

Calvin Rutherford would eventually go into the slave trading business.  It is interesting to note that the nature of his business is not stated in this letter.
