Majr. Jas. T. Gleaves

Sir
I see by the report of the Enquirer of this evening, you are asking leave to amend the 2nd Section of the Wythe Watering Company. The amendment not haveing been asked for by The President and directors, has excited considerable feeling by the stockholders as to what that amendment, will be, before asking it common curtesy at least to the Citizens of our Town (who are the largest stockholders) ought to been shewn toward them by their Representative, a memorial has been prepared and sent on for the purpose of haveing the subject placed before the House, I drop you this note to advise you of it, and I regret that it has not been sent to you; as I have always understood the Representative of each county, of course attends to the matters from his county. The company have gone on agreeable to the charter, and I refer you to the memorial for the proceedings by them and hope sincerely that nothing may be done by this Legislature to mar the Prospects of the Stockholders --,

I should feel very much obliged to you if you will by any Legislative act get 1 or $200,00 spent among us in some improvement of our Roads, you will find that, would meet with a verry welcome

W. H. Spiller is William Hickman Spiller and he would be murdered on Main Street in Wytheville in 1855.

“People of the upper country” is a unique way of identifying South West Virginians.
