                                                                                    1838
Wythe Va the 20th of December

Dear Samuel
Yours by Mr. Cownutt was thankfully received by me last evening,  It found us all well except your Grandmother and I think she is better than when I last wrote to you.  I was happy to find that you were enjoying the blessings of good health.
I was informed by Mr. Cownutt that you were a progressing very well with your studies, that together with your good health is the greatest intent that I can now feel for you, as I hope that you fare much better under the administration of Mr. Roscue & his lady, than you did under the administration of the former incumbents.
You say that you do not know the precise time that the examination will take place, that I hope you will ascertain to a certainty and let me know in your next letter as I wish to attend there at that time, and now Samuel let me earnestly ask it of you as a dutiful son to prepare yourself properly for examination and do all the credit you can to yourself as well as to your relations.
No doubt but you have heard of the alarming fire they citizens of Wythe Town met with on Saturday night last

The fire was first discovered in Fosters Taylors Shop. Every building was burnt on that Side of the street from Miller Tavern leaving that up to William Brown and on the otherside of the street from Steeler leaving his house up to the lowest house leaving that, it is the impression of some that the fire was set out by some Incendiary and others that it caught from the stove pipe.
I hope that you will take care of your clothes that you have with you and make them last you this session as it would be difficult to obtain your measure for a coat, I will take you a good waistcoat with me when I go to the examination,  I also want you to get some person to take your measure for a pair of shoes both the length & thickness on a peace of paper but a small strip and write on it which mark is the length and which is the thickness, do this soon & I will get you a pair of shoes made and take them with me when I go out.
Your brother Wythe is a boarding at your Gramdmother Crocketts & going to school to Mr. Tabler  I will go over tomorrow to see him
Samuel be particular in spelling your words when you write, I see in speaking of the debating societies in your letter when you speak of them discussing a question you spell it disgusting,  I want you to examine your Dictionary for the two words & see then what a wide difference there is in the meaning of the two words.
