Randolph Rutherford, who died in January, 1841, had appointed his neighbor, James T. Gleaves, as his executor. Rutherford had directed in his will that his land be sold upon his death. Estates were commonly disposed of at auction. James Wallis was the auctioneer who “cried” the sale.
