Dear Uncle

I now take my pen in hand to write you a few lines. We are all in good health at this time. Sincerely hoping that these may find you and your family and all of my relatives in good health. Sister Sarah Hamilton departed this life on the 7th of the present month after a long and painful illness of consumption leaving five children though they are all of them of some size but one the smallest about two years old. Mother (Catherine Halsey Gleaves) is living at the old place yet. James (James T. Gleaves) and wife (Sarah Dunaway Gleaves) living with her. She enjoys tolerable health though she has broken very much within the last year or two. All of your relations are well as far as my knowledge extends at this time. Miss Emaline Ramsey was married in the Last of August. She married at my house. She has lived with me for two or three years and done very well in marrying. Polly Ann is living in the neighborhood and well. George is in Tenn and speaks of returning to Va shortly. He says aunt Nancy expects to be in Tennessee abouth 25th Dec Be pleased to tell her she must call and see me and spend a few weeks or months at my house according to her stay. It has been so long since I have heard of you coming to see us all. I expect you have declined ever coming out to Tennessee any more. Just colelude (conclude) and start and you will soon get to Davison Cty

where the most of your relations live in Tenn. where I have no doubt they would feel much pleasure to see you. As for the times I will now give you a small detail of them. Money is very scarce corn 1.00 a 1.25 tbt wheat 1.00 bu Pork 2 1/2 a 3 cents per lb Tobacco our principal article of growth is worth I am told 3 to 5 cents. Cotton 8 or 9 cents. The lands are at a stance in price according to quality. Negroes been a fair prices. Horses & mules very low. I expect you have heard long since of the prostration of Democracy in Tenn. Our Jas K Polk getting beat for Gov. by Major T. C. Jones a Whig. I think Democracy is gaining ground though and our valiant Jas K Polk will be elected for Gov at our next election though it is some time off. It is said in Tenn that the Whig nor Democrats will neither have Capt Tyler. As for my part I am inclined to put him about mid way. The Capt has fallen very short of fulfilling the expectations of the Whig Party or at least the Cider & Coon Party. Democracy has but few charms in Wilson County. You must excuse me for not writing before this time as I have often promised my self to write but neglected until the present. Give my respects to all the family. To Aunt Nancy & except (accept) for your self my best respects.
Yours &e
G. T. Gleaves (Guy Twigg Gleaves)
