Dear Brother
Since it is your request and arduous desire for me to write to you I will do it with the greatest pleasure immaginable although I have no news of any importance but first Politics since it excites so much the people of our country there is a great many more Whigs here than Democrats but we are like unto the Sparton band, the Whigs here are a great deal cowed since they heard from the Election, but I am some what fearful yet but a person can form for sides yet for there are so many different tales sometimes the Whigs have good news and they just roar  but principle Whigs here has given up the Election they begin to find out the nossin Jimmy K Polk ask some of the Rosenbum  who they are going to vote for they will say Jimmy Polk oh" oh" Dati vos satis) of politics  I was very sorry to hear of the death of Mr Foster & Elliot but we all have to pay that debt   I am getting on very well with my studies now  we are in the forth book of Virgil now   I have four studies now and they keep me busy  they are Virgil  Geometry (advanced) Chemistry & Constitution of the U. States   I am doing my best for I am not coming here any more under no circumstances   (Manney a room mate of mine was dismissed from here the other day but keep this to yourself.)  Write to me all about the Girls.  I have not only short time to write this as som of the boys is going to the Post Offic and dont want to wait.
                         Yours Respectly

Transcriber Notes

George Wythe Gleaves attended Emory & Henry for the following sessions: 1841-42, 1842-43, 1843-44, 1844-45.  From the catalogue, it appears that there were no distinct differentiation of classes until the 1842-43 sessions.  In 1842-43 session, Wythe was assigned to the Preparatory Department.  In 1843-44 & 1844-45 sessions, he was in the Irregulars.

During the 1844-45 session, James L. Manney, from Beaufort, N. C. was a member of the junior class.
