Louisville Ky August 14th 1843
Dr Brother
I here with inclose you a twenty dollar note payable at athens for the purpose of paying your expence to Va for those Negroes of mothers I presume that you have been expecting me there for the last thirty days I did not leave New Orleans untill in July and my business here Called my attention so closely that I find it impossible for me to leave without a great loss to myself I [hope] that this will be a Sufficient apoligy for me not Coming to see you it is not that I do not want to see you all but I find it almost impossible for me to leave my business without a great loss and another Consideration I could not be of any service to Mother before She gets her negroes they are free from any incumbrance Browne has dismissed the Suit against them you can go on and get them any time after you receive this they have been hired out you can draw the pay for their services and arrainge with Coln. (Colonel) John A. Saunders for that Claim he holds against me for Austin I will remain here untill about the first of October and then I will leave for the New Orleans with my Negroes write me to this place before I leave I want you to get the negroes forthwith I am well and hope you all are well

Calvin M. Rutherford had formed a partnership with another Louisville slave trader in 1842 and they were purchasing enslaved people to take down the river to New Orleans at the time he wrote this letter.
