Dear Father,
I wrote simply to comply with my promise.  I reached this place about-3 o clock P.M. & am at the Columbian Hotel   I had rather an unpleasant trip on the Packett.  There were about 70- I suppose on board.  I was fortunate enough to get with Mr J.P. Cruin in Wytheville he will go I suppose all the way to Phila with me & by the way a very clever kind fellow
Tho J. Hoyt who was shot by Myers a few days ago is from what I can learn dying. There is no sympathy at all for him in Richmond every one thinking he is guilty of the charge
I will write as soon as I get fix in Phila & give you the particular news
                         Yours truly
                           S. C. Gleaves
