Emory & Henry College Sept 7th 1843

Dear Mother
The pleasure that is afforded to me in writing to you is unspeakable and full of glory. Primus hoc est that I am pursuing my studies as rapidly as possible. My studies are Latin Algebra commenced & advanced and farming in Pope, Essay on man wich is hard indeed. They had a half way camp meeting at Lebanon. All of the students went and returned back with a disease called the Tiler Grifft wich was caused by cold, but I have not been sick since I left home. There is a great many new students here but I think not many as last session. The tents holders treated the students verry bad at the camp meeting. The students lay in after one night and they threw water an then Old Tobe Smith and Olds Heaskew were the head men. The boys intend to duck old Tobe when he come here. I would not be surprise if they would whip him and he is aware of it too. The boys bhaved very bad there and if they had done the same the next they would have attempted to take some of them to Jail although in vain for I do not believe that Washington County could take one of them to Jail for they are like Brothers. My room mates are Hunt and two Triggs from the salt works. I think they are very fine fellows. I got here safe but the day that I left home I got very wet. My cloth got a little wet and stained but none to hurt. Collins is going to build a brick house for the professors about a hundred yards from

from the Hall. I think they now best get out of the mine first. We have a new Professor Longly a perfect yanky. The fair is usual no better. Hunt send you his best respects.

P.S. Tell Sampson that Cranwell has sold his watch for $7.50.
