Dear Father
When I had written my first letter I thought it would be unnecessary to write any more but I find that I will have to wait a little while to Get the Money that is coming to me for those cattle last purchased by you. Mr. Glasscocke has sold nearly all of his cattle, but some on a credit of three months. But he has received enough to pay me I expect. So on tomorrow I want to get it & start as soon as possible. I will have to stay some longer than I expected on account of my mare's back getting sore. But as soon as I get everything fixed I will start for home. I think Mr. Glasscocke will make between four and five hundred Dollars on the Lot, a profit far surpassing any Drover I have heard of yet. I am at present at old Mr. Glasscocke. They have treated me very kindly indeed, & so has William. It is likely that Waumpler & Wallis has got home before this for we discharged them

about ten days ago, so they can give you any news you want. Coming through Augusta I met with Thos. Johnson in the road and asked me something about the cattle & lastly asked me my name. He appeared very glad to hear from you & invited me to give him a call as I returned. And we stayed with Jas Johnson all night & then I saw his mother as sprightly as ever, so I have seen nearly all of my relations by accident. I would like to hear from home, so if you want you may write me a letter & direct it to Staunton as I will go through there as I return.

Yours very Respectfully
Saml C Gleaves

Transcriber Notes

Two days before this letter was written Samuel Crockett Gleaves would have celebrated his 20th birthday.  Samuel graduated from Emory & Henry College in 1842.  He would not enter the University of Pennsylvania Medical School until the fall of 1846.  It is unknown at this time what Samuel did for the next three years as there are no letters after this one until he is on his way to Philadelphia in 1846.

It is not known how the Johnsons are ‘relations’.

Fauquier County is located in north eastern Virginia with Warrenton as its county seat.  Today it is considered a part of the Washington Metropolitan Area and is known for being at the heart of hunt and wine country.  Rectortown is located in the northern end of the county.

Staunton is the county seat of Augusta County which is located in the Valley of Virginia.
