Emory & Henry College       Aprile 30th, 1841

Sir

I must inform you of the difficulties that has originated here this session, there has been the greatest excitement amongst the teachers and students that ever was at this place, in the first place I must inform you Something concerning the downfall of the Calliopean society! The Elustrious Wm P. George at the commencement of the term brought up a resolution before the house for all the members of the society to ware crape for the space of thirty days. To show our Respect for the member who has departed this life Since the close of last session! and after the Resolution had passed the house the gentleman offered his services to purchase the crape and, the members not having the least doubt of the gentlemans honesty gave him 25 cts a piece so the society made up $4 and off he goes to town and gets 2 yds of crape and told us that he had given $2 per yard which was a verry small piece for each quarter which caused suspicion to arise among some of us

and Mr. Holiday went to town and made some enquires and found that from the best information that could be had from Mr. Snass he only gave $1 per yard! So we reigned up the gentleman before the sciety! The President some way or other became dissatisfied and would not let the house act upon it. So 13 of the members sceceded and left some 8 or 10 members! So things went on in a terable state and last Saturday there were some 10 or twelve went down to Stewards and took a heavy drafts of Alcohol and this morning at 8 oclock Mr. Collins called a meeting of the students and expelled Wm P George, Stephen S, Crocket & Austin and gave the balance of the crowd good warning that if they did not reform that they would share the same fate, and he told John Traylor that he should have a public Reproof. I must inform you that I am well and getting along verry well in my studdies; gave my Respects to all enquiring friends

I am with Respect your sincere friend
George Koninburn
