Camp Walker
Sept 13th 1861
My Dear Wife
I wrote to you on yesterday without giving you the particulars of our late Battle at Gauley River. The enemy was about 8,000 with reserve of one thousand. We comised the Battle 1/2 past 2 & fought until near 7 o’clock we fought nearly 5 hours in on the most terrific fury you ever heard. The enemy had 13 pieces mostly rifle cannon. The hours was full of ball & shell I was in the midst & came off without "one bone being broken" we being loose one man the enemy’ loss 413 we fell back in the night else we would have been totally annihilated the next morning- we loss some horses & -prisoners I lost my tent & fine blanket
I am glad no worse - you get Noel to give you the "Daily Lynchburg Republican" & you will see the particulars. Genl Floyd recd a flesh wound in the right arm will soon recover I think a ball passed in 2 feet of my head & several bombs exploded in 20 feet of me I rode up & down the line encouraging the men with a large navy pistol two men fell back I drew my pistol & told them if they came any nearer I would shoot them at which one fell back & fought manfully I hope you will send the particulars to Father & Mother Write soon
Your husband
