GLEAVES, Alice Mary died July 25, 1958

WYTHEVILLE. July 25 (1958) – Miss Alice M. Gleaves died today in a local hospital.

 

  Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Laura Keene Robinson, Wytheville, and Mrs. J. R. Rich, Cleveland, Ohio.

 

  Funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the home.  Interment will be in East End Cemetery.

 

  The body will be taken from Porterfield – Minnick Funeral Home to the residence Saturday afternoon.

Miss Alice M. Gleaves

 

  Impressive funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock for Miss Alice M. Gleaves at the family home on South Fourth Avenue.  Officiating was the Rev. D. L. Gwathmey, D. D.  The beautiful and fitting hymn, “Near To The Heart Of God,” was sung as a solo by W. T. Trevillian, with Mrs. R. P. Thomas, piano accompanist.  Mrs. Thomas also played “Jesus Calls Us,” the favorite hymn of the deceased.  The interment was in the family square, East End Cemetery.

 

  The active pallbearers were: Rex Painter, Thomas Simmerman, III, G. S. Topham, J. H. Crockett, James L. Gleaves, Jr., S. B. Campbell, Jr., Dan Cassell, P. A. Early, Henry Pattison and W. C. Williams.

 

  Miss Gleaves was one of Wytheville’s best known and loved citizens.  She was a highly successful violin and piano teacher.  One of the most ardent workers in the Presbyterian Church, she had served as a teacher in the Sunday School, as well as holding various other offices.

 

  Possessing a winsome personality, the deceased had acquired a great host of friends.  She was especially noted as a person, who was ever willing to render an act of kindness or service to others.

 

  Miss Gleaves was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Charles W. Gleaves.  Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Laura Keene Robinson, Wytheville, and Mrs. J. R. Rich, Cleveland, Ohio.

 

  The body was taken from Porterfield-Minnick Funeral Home to the residence Saturday afternoon.

 

  Those from a distance attending the funeral were:  Mr. and Mrs. Peter Keenan and two sons, John and Jim, Charleston, W. Va.; John R. Rich, Jr., Huntington, W. Va.; Mr. and Mrs. James Sampselle, Warwick, Va.; Mr. and Mrs. Gene Ohlsen, Bristol, and Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Wilkinson, Coalwood, W. Va.
