Dr. Samuel Crockett Gleaves

Created by Alice S. Hix, the great, great granddaughter of Dr. Gleaves and presented at the 2012 Gleaves Reunion.

I would like to thank the following people without whom this work would not have been possible:

  • Dr. Randy Chitwood, a Wytheville physician, who had to forego his medical practice due to health reasons and spent the rest of his life researching and recording the history of Wythe County.  His work is available in the Kegley Library at the Wytheville Community College in Wytheville, Virginia
  • Daisy Gleaves who did such an expert job of transcribing the documents in the Letters section associated with Dr. Gleaves
  • Charles Gleaves, a great grandson of Dr. Gleaves, for providing pictures of Taylor Gleaves' family
  • George Wilkerson for the stained glass pictures
  • The Dunkley family for sharing all of the wonderful letters.

Thomas Benjamin 'Blunt' Gleaves

Created by Robert Gleaves and presented at the 2010 Gleaves Reunion and the 2012 Gleaves Reunion.

Robert Gleaves found additional documents associated with T. B. Gleaves and his family in Dyer County, Tennessee in 2012.

A correction received from the GGGG-niece of Nancy Ann Burnham Gleaves. (her gg-grandma was a sister, Margaret Jane Burnham who m. Alfred Edgar Troy in Dyer Co., TN).

"I noticed there is a note about the letter that TB Gleaves writes to William C. Burnham Oct 12, 1883 concerning his health. This is Nancy Ann's brother, William Colombus, b. 1852 in Dyer Co., TN, not her father as stated. Her father was David Burnham m. to S. (Sarah) Unknown (possibly Bell)."

Additional information received from this source includes:

Here's some more info on that line of the Burnham family. The censuses of Dyer Co, in 1850 and 1860 were transcribed wrong. Going back to the original, the M.A. in 1850 and W.A. in 1860 should both be "N. A." for Nancy Ann.

David Burnham b. abt 1816 in TN (probably Williamson Co, TN, of the Burnhams originally of NC, but this is a dead end so far for me) m. S. (Sarah or Sallie) Unknown (possibly Bell since there is a Sally Bell in the next generation and there is a Bell family living near Burnhams in the 1820 Williamson Co. census--all speculation of course)

Children of David Burnham and S. were:
    George Washington b. 1837 m. Emily
    Joshua b. 1840 m. Lou Duncan
    Mary Elizabeth b. 1842 m. WHH Murry in 1865
    Nancy Ann b. 1/15/1844 m. TB Gleaves
Margaret Jane b. 2/25/1846 m. Alfred Edgar Troy b. 4/9/1850 in Randolph Co., NC (They eventually settled in Van Buren Co, AR in the part which is now White Co., AR)
James H. b. 1848 m. Sophie (Black?), moved to Gatesville, TX
Newton b. 1850 (This name really intrigues me because the name Newton is everywhere in the Burnham family)
    William Columbus b. 1852
Matilda "Mattie" b. 1859 m. Z.T. Gleaves 12/24/1874 Dyer Co., TN (Editor note:  This is Zachary Taylor Gleaves, half brother of TB Gleaves.)

Hope that helps you some. If you know of anyone else researching the Burnhams in this area or NC who might have more, please let me know.  (Editor note: use the Contact Page to be put in touch with this person.) There is an awesome Burnham Website here.
