Wythe County 28th January 1825

Dear Sir,
I am under the necessity of asking you to do me a favor, the remitance of money by mail is so uncertain which prevents me from forwarding to you as much as would be sufficient to answer my purpose,  I wish you (to) purchase for Francis Fergus fifty Acres of land warrant, and you shall have the money refunded to you when you return home,  I also wish you to examine the Warrant Book in the Registers office, and see the warrant No 17397 to Josiah Baker dated on the 26th June 1783 be all approprated, or if not, awhether an exchange warrant has issued in lieu – please to make a memorandum upon the result,

I have not been at Wythe C. H. since you left home, there is nothing new in this country except that Reuben Crawford has been guilty of forging several checks on Drafts on the Branch Bank at Lynchburg, and for passing one to Dr. Johnston at Salem has been apprehended & tried at Fincastle but acquitted.  I am informed that Mr. Friel is a candidate again, and Charles Crockett is spoken of also as a candidate and if that be the case I cannot consent that you either you or Col. Sanders shall decline.

Give my compliments to the Col and accept them yourself.
I am yours with esteem
Joseph Montgomery

Transcriber Notes

Joseph Montgomery lived near Fort Chiswell and attended Anchor of Hope Presbyterian Church in Max Meadows.
Mr. Friel would be Manassas Friel who also lived about ½ mile south of Fort Chiswell and ran a general store there in the early 1800s.
Charles Crockett lived at Bolling Green but perhaps not as early as 1825.
Col. Sanders could be several different men in Wythe County.
The town of Fincastle where the forgery trial took place is north of Roanoke about 20 miles and is the county seat of Botetout County.
Other individuals mentioned include Josiah Baker, Francis Fergus, Dr. Johnston & Reuben Crawford.
