Transcriber Notes

Dicy was probably a slave who originally belonged to Randal Rutherford. He died in early January, 1841. James T. Gleaves was the executor of Rutherford;s will. John Austin was married to Delila Rutherford, a daughter of Randal Rutherford and the Austins lived in McMinn County, Tennessee. Dicy was probably willed to the Austins but they had not yet taken possession of her as she was living in Wythe County, Virginia at the time of this document. On February 2, 1841 the public sale of Rutherford's personal inventory took place. Since the date of this transaction occurred about 2 weeks after the sale, Dicy was put out for hire until Austin could take possession of her.

This document is recording the expense that Simon Umbarger incurred to provide clothing and shoes for Dicy and her children. This expense would be applied against the amount that was owed for her hire.

Simon Umbarger was married to Melinda Gose who was the daughter of Mary (Polly) Porter and Stephen Gose. Mary Porter was the daughter of Polly Gleaves and Andrew Porter, Sr and Polly Gleaves was an older sister to James T. Gleaves.

In Letter 1148, Dicy is also hired out to Polly Pickle in 1841 and this accounts for expenses paid by Polly Pickle against Dicy's hire. Polly Pickle was originally Mary/Polly Porter. Her first husband was Stephen Gose . After his death, Polly married David Pickle in 1831. These two documents show the mother and the daughter incurring costs while hiring Dicy.

The Porter family appears to have had a number of dealings with the Rutherfords as Andrew Porter, Sr. was one of the main buyers at the public sale. See Letter 414.
