Elsie Gleaves, age 90 of Bowie, formerly of Breckenridge, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at Bellmire Healthcare Center in Bowie. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 3, at Elliott Street Church of Christ with Jim Cox officiating. Interment will follow in the Battle Creek Cemetery in Stephens County under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Elsie A. Gleaves was born on Dec. 28, 1920, in Brazoria County, to parents, J.H. Donawho and Mary B. Dockery Donawho. She grew up in Moran, where she graduated from Moran High School. Elsie went on to attend Hendrick Hospital School of Nursing in Abilene, Texas, from which she graduated in 1943. During WWII, Elsie served the war effort by working as a stateside nurse for the U.S. Soldiers. Elsie married Alton M. Gleaves on April 22, 1953, in Abilene. In 1967, Alton and Elsie moved to Breckenridge, Texas, where she continued her work as a nurse at Stephens Memorial Hospital and the local nursing homes. Elsie enjoyed sewing, handwork and spending time with her husband as they traveled together. In 2004, The Gleaves’ moved to Bowie, to be closer to their family. Elsie was a member of the Elliott Street Church of Christ congregation in Breckenridge and Carter Lake Road Church of Christ in Bowie. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Randall Gleaves; brother, Herman Donawho and sister, Winnie Singleton. Elsie is survived by her daughter, Judy Hall and husband, David of Bowie; grandchildren, Karissa Rohmer and husband, David of Bluegrove, John Hall and fianceé, Jenny Garnett of College Station, Brian Gleaves of Mesquite and Tony Gleaves and wife, Ashley of San Antonio; and sisters, Delma Thornton and husband, Bob of Stephenville and Johnnie Adams of Kingfisher, Okla.
