Elizabeth “Betty” Fern Johnson, 77, of Oak Grove, MO, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at St. Mary’s Medical Center of Blue Springs. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 5th at the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove; burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00-2:30 p.m. preceding the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Lakeview Woods State School.
Betty was born January 6, 1932 in Columbia, MO, the daughter of Obie & Nannie (Boyd) Shaw. She married Wallace W. Johnson on April 6, 1952. Betty had been a teacher’s aide and bus driver for Lakeview Woods State School in Lee’s Summit for 33 years. She and Wallace helped start a sheltered workshop for handicapped children in Independence. Betty had been a caregiver for their son, David, for 35 years before his death in 1991. She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove.
Her survivors include her husband of 57 years: Wallace Johnson of the home; two sons: Michael Johnson of St. Louis, MO and Kelly Johnson & wife Mary of Oak Grove, MO; one brother: Donald D. Shaw of Independence, MO; one sister: Patricia Webb of Albuquerque, NM; two grandchildren: Cacey D. Johnson & Shawn M. Johnson; and two great-grandchildren: Zoe M. Johnson & Ocean A. Cozart.
Betty was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and she was a friend to everyone she knew. She will be sadly missed.
Betty was married to Wallace Johnson, who is a descendant of Margaret Finley and William Gleaves, Jr.
