Washington County, Va     July the 9th 1838

Dear Mother
I received your kind letter on the 9 inst and was verry glad. your may be assured for I was waiting for a long time, for a letter. I your in the first spoke of how to do since I have been here. I have conducted myself as well as any person could do. They have had prayers every morning since I have been here and I haved attended prayers. I haven't mist prayers yet and their has been preaching every Sunday since I have been here and I can say that I haven't mist preaching yet. And I think that is pretty well and as minding Mr. Collins since I have been here I have minded every word he has said to so far and I low do it as long as i stay here for I know it is my duty to mind every word he says to me and therfore I low to it in a proper way for i know it is for my own good. Mother that is way i do i thing that is wirght and I keep out of bad company as much as any Person for I know people will notice every thing that is done here and therfore I try to shun bad company as much as can. I am sorry to here that Dicy is dead but I knew

that she coudent live any time when I was their. I am glad to here that grand Mother is as well as common. Tell Wythe James Robert that I am well at this time. Tell James to learn as much as he can i am glad to here that Uncle John is going to move in Virginia to live I hope that thee springs will help Grand Mother and Aunt Marget I am sorry to here that Dr Crocketts wife is dead You named in your letter that you wanted to let your here in my letter if my cloths was as good as any that my age They are as good as any and if anything they little better and more of them than any i have seen then said I must write to your who was my favorites at chool I have a good many I will nane the best ones Mr Hale Mr. Richardson of Washington Mr Ceicel of Grayson and several others. I will tell you when I see you you then named that i must write to you my studies I am studing Arithemetice Grammar Latin Geography I have four studies and I get my Lessons very well I am sorry to write to you that we had a misfortune happen the other day we were cuting in the woods and they was one of the students was standing by one that was choping and the axe slip out

of his hand and cut his knee very bad you said i must wite if have seen any any of your uncle Taylors family i have not sen any of them yet I saw Mr. Fulton about two weeks a go he said maby he would be at our house their in a week or two you then said how I got my bed and truck from Col. Byars I got their about 9 o clock and I staid their about 12 o clock then I went over to the College in the first place I asked Mr John Byars wether he would let a boy take my Bed and trunk over that evening or in the morning he said he was busy and that he could not do it then well I thought that i would go over to see Mr Ganaway if he wouldn't fetche it over over for me he said he would do so he brought it over Father i want you to wite to me as soon you get this letter and let m know how I am to come home at the vacation if you Please it will be in a bout 5 weeks Mother I want you to write to me in thee new letter how many of my cloths i must fetch home If you Please they are getting well of thee fever.
