Dear Samuel

I have come to this place to day almost purposedly, expecting to get a letter from you, as it has been sometime since I recd any news from you, But have found none in the Office, This I cannot account for unless you are kept so close to your studies that you cannot write, your Mother as well as all the rest of us are quite anxious that you would write & let us know how you are and how you are a doing & I want you at all events to answer this as soon as you receive it, & let me know wheather you have got your clothes that were left at Mrs. Sanders; some time since, and also if you received my letter telling you that they were to be sent to Mrs. Sanders which letter I enclosed a Five Dollar note to you in, and I also want you to say how you are furnished in panteloons for the winter Your mother says she has a Janes patern for you if you should need it & if not when you return you will get them.

We are all as well as usual your Grandmother is no better. We have Mrs. Doctor Watson & her two little daughters boarding with us this winter. She is to teach Wythe James & Robert. My crop of corn is fine. I have not got it quite all in the crib. Do not fail to write immediately & let me know whether you are one appointed to speak at the examination & when it will be and if you should need anything else you must name it, your Uncle John & family are well He gets drunk as usual

Samuel is a student at Emory and Henry College when his father writes him this letter and he has just turned 16 years old the previous month.

The grandmother is James’ mother, Elizabeth Turk Gleaves.  She will died on July 15, 1840.

Wythe (age 12), James (age 6) & Robert (age 3 ½) are Samuel’s younger brothers.

Uncle John is John Crockett, Malvina Crockett Gleaves’ brother.
