Dear Uncle,
I arrived last Sunday morning and am present boarding at the Rowe 200 Arch Street. I am pretty well pleased with Philadelphia but I can assure you it falls far short of my expectations. There is not the pride & fashion, that you would suppose but constantly plain unassuming people. I have heard several lectures and there will be one or two given daily until the session commences.
Gratuatiously, this is one advantage of coming soon. I am rooming with D M French. We are at present giving $4.00 per week for board, but our room is large enough for one more so when the session commences we will take a roommate and by this means get board for $3.50. In fact you can't get boarding less than $4.00 any where else. You have to give .50¢ per day for washing. I have not got my tickets but intend doing so shortly.
There are about 100 students some very smart fellows. Zas/e Polk's nephew John Ross’ son is here but I can tell you there are some pretty green. So I have the consolation to know that there are more folks than those that hail from Western Virginia.
It cost me about $4.00 coming. I came by Washington City but didn't stop long and the route I came is less costly than any other.
I will continue to write giving you the general news.
Respectfully yours,
S.C. Gleaves
