                   Emory & Henry College June 12th 1840

Dear Father
I have received a letter from you dated 5th of June I was glad to get one from you all for I have been waiting some time for one.  I was very glad to hear that you all are enjoying good health except Grand Mother which I expected she was not.  I wish that I could see you all but her particularly for I know that she wants to see me very bad.  & as I have not seen her for a good while.  You said something in your letter about coming home or you would not advised me to come for fear of getting behind in my studies.  I want you to write me shortly (in the next letter) about coming home as she wants to see me very bad and I want to see her and if you want me to come I will try to get a horse and come home.  You said that the Creek was verry high and did a great deal of injury I believe it was a general thing as far as I can here.  You wished to know how my cloths did &e they are very good yet I think that I will not need any more this Session except for the examination as you say you have some for me already made.  You say that I must write more frequent than I do

I think that you have not received all of my letters to you (or there is something the matter for I think I have sent several letters that you have not received) for I Believe that I have written more letters this Session than I did last but they must have been misplaced some way or in some manner.  I have no more news in particular except I think I am getting along with my studies tolerable well (I think)  This week one of my fellow students did something that was right bad I think  Miss Ann Trigg who stays at the college stays in a room that Dr Wiley formely stayed in and there is a back porch to the boarding house as you know and by walking on the porch getting out in the school room window you can see in this room.  Well he gets out as I have told you and walks on the porch and comes to Miss Ann's window to see her un dress but as it happen he was caught at the attempt by some of the students and even Mr Haskew seen him.  He is still here but in very bad estimation by some of the students his name is C. W. Charlton.{  I have no more news to tell you  Write to me shortly as soon as you get this letter}  Nothing more at present but remains your Son.
