Emory & Henry College
Dec, 5th 1841

Honored Sir

I know it will be a great satisfaction to you, and my mother to hear that we are well.
As this is the last time that I will write to you I must give you rather a valedictory of E & Henry. You in your letter to me requested to know the precise time that the session would be out. It will as I stated to you before be out on the 22nd of this month. There will be an examination, but I fear there will not be many students for some are going away in a week or ten days. But I expect to stay till the last day which will be on Tuesday. But we will start if it is good weather on Wednesday and will walk a far as we can that day maybe to Mr. Thomas's. I want you to send for me so we will meet there or elsewhere. I will tell Mr. Collins what you said, and tell him to be patient. I expect we will need some money so you may send

little of that which is the “root of all evil”.  I have nothing more at present, but to say that there are some things which have happen since you was here, that is right black – I will tell you when I see you.

I am Honored Sir
Your affectionate son
S. C. Gleaves

(PS) It is likely that if the examination dont continue till Tuesday evening that we will start from the College in the evening (Tuesday) and go as far as the Ford.  If the weather is good.

Transcriber Notes

This letter from Samuel is interesting in the tone that he takes with his father. Usually Samuel is quite respectful and deferring to his father, but in this one he seems to take a rather flippant attitude with him. This letter is one of five regarding the end of the session and the transportation home. Also see letters 267, 248, 249 and 250.
