This deed of Bargain & Sale from Ruth Dunwoody to James T. Gleaves was presented in court and with the certificate of acknowledgement annexed admitted to record.

This deed of conveyance made this twenty seventh day of March in the year One thousand eight hundred, and fifty six.  Witnesseth that Ruth Dunwoody of the city of Philadelphia and  State of Pennsylvania for and in consideration of twenty five dollars to her paid, doses Sell promise and convey to James T. Gleaves of Wythe county, Virginia his heirs or assigns all her rights, title and claim in the four following tracts of Land in Wythe County, Virginia on the waters of Cripple Creek described as follows: Firstly, one containing two hundred and forty acres Beginning at a walnut on the North bank of Cripple Creek N 83o E 60 poles to a double white oak & double hickory saplings Thence with Thompson Atkins land N 5 o W 120 poles to a chestnut oak on an east hill side Thence with George Fishers land N 51½ o W 104 poles to a white oak, white oak stump & dogwood Thence with said Gleaves land S 56 o N 200 poles To a white oak S 3 o  E 56 poles to the bank of the creek between two walnut trees Thence down the creek with its meanders S 80 o E 18 poles to a sycamore Thence with the meanders of the creek as follows, S 361/2 o E 58 poles S 15 o  E 34 poles N 81 o E 59 poles N 68 o E 17 poles N 53 ½ o E 43 poles to the Beginning -----Secondly, one ----(not readable, in crease of paper) ing at a white oak and pine on a line of said Gleaves’ land Thence with S 22 ¾ o W 206 poles to two white oaks on a hill side Thence with the land of Randle Rutherford, decd. S 17 o E 39 poles to four maples on a ridge S 60 o E 39 poles to a stooping hickory one yard south of a large white oak stump S 81 ½ o E 104 poles to three poplars from one root N 65 o E 68 poles a white oak Thence with Eli Davis land N 48 o E 44 poles to a small black oak N 26½ o E

47 poles to two black oak saplings. Thence leaving said Davis land N 81 ½ o W 48 poles to a white oak and double chestnut oak on the top of the grape ridge N 75 o W. 54 poles to two chestnut oak. S. 45 o W. 8 poles to a forked chestnut corner to another tract of said Gleaves land Thence with it S 20½ o  W 40 poles to a large chestnut oak and poplar S  59 ½ o W 108 poles to a large white oak stump one yard North of a stooping hickory marked N. 28¾ o W 41 poles to a red oak and black oak on the side of a ridge N 38 o E 125 poles to a maple and black oak S 58 o E 52 poles to  two white oaks Thence leaving his own land N 34 o E 33 poles to three chestnut in a branch Thence N 38 ¾ o E 144 poles to the beginning Another tract containing thirty five acres lying and being in Wythe County on the waters of cripple creek Bounded as follows Viz; Beginning at large black oak corner of Eli Davis land Thence with it  N 4 o E 63 poles to a black oak S 40 o E 38 poles to chestnut oak and pine saplings S 55 o E129 poles to two white oaks on a line of a survey made for Thomas Rustin, Thence with it S 76 o W 94 poles to a poplar corner thereof and on line of said Gleaves land Thence with his own land N 31 o E 44 poles to a white oak N 67 o W 65 poles to the beginning (unreadable, in crease of paper.) –corner of Wythe on cripple creek and bounded as follows; Viz; Beginning at three cypress from one root on south side of said creek a corner of William Wilkinson land running Thence with a line thereof  N. 12 o E. 14 poles crossing said creek to a stake on the north bank of the same and near a walnut marked as a pointer to corner of said Wilkinson & Gleaves lands.  Thence within the lines of the latter, S 82¾ o W 48½ poles again

crossing said creek to a sycamore stump on the South bank of the same, Thence S 2 o W 41½ poles to a maple scrub near a chestnut oak marked as a pointer Thence S 20 o W 22 poles to a pine and white oak Thence S 38¾ o E 103 poles to a pine on said Gleaves line and corner to said Wilkinson land Thence with a line of the latter N 8 o W 164 poles to the beginning.
To have and to hold the said tracts of land with them appurtenances to the said James T. Gleaves and his heirs forever in witness whereof the said Ruth Dunwoody hath hereunto set her hand and seal the day and year aforesaid written,

Burton a commissioner appointed by the Governor of the State of Virginia for the said State of Pennsylvania Certify that Ruth Dunwoody whose name is signed to the writing above bearing date on the twenty seventh day of March in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty six has acknowledged the same before me in my State aforesaid.  Given under my hand and official Seal this twenty seventh day of March A.D. 1856.
