Papers for
the Settlement
of E. Gleaves
estate

Transcriber Notes

From the ‘Worksheet of Elizabeth Gleaves' Estate for Nathan Allen’s share’ document, letter 874, dated 1843 about, James Turk Gleaves has calculated that each share of Elizabeth Gleaves’ estate will be $52.93.

Note that at the time of the settlement, there were factional parts to a penny.

The remaining receipts he has added to be a total of $151.85 (actual total is $161.85)
The sum of these two totals is $340.18 ½  (actual sum is $350.18 ½ )

Thomas Gleaves’ share is given to his son Benjamin F. Gleaves

Absalom Gleaves’ share, since he is now dead, is given to his living children, Guy T. Gleaves, James T. Gleaves and Tarresa Perry and to the children of his daughter, Sarah Gleaves Hamilton (who died November 7, 1841) with each receiving ¼ of the $52.93.

Sally Gleaves Allen’s share of $52.93 is given to her husband, Nathan Allen.

Elizabeth Gleaves Ramsey’s portion is given to B. F. Gleaves to deliver to William Ramsey, Jr and to her children.  Their total is $49.70.  It is not known what happened to the other $3.23.  Nor is it known why the $59.52 ½ line for the Ramseys children was marked out.

Margaret Gleaves Turk share of $52.93 was given to E. B. Gaither for her.

Polly Gleaves Porter died in 1833.  It is not clear why her heirs were paid their amounts.  Several of her children received $5.88.  $52.93 divided 9 ways would result in $5.88 each.  The Gleaves Family database shows that Polly had 9 children.

The monies were paid as follows:
William Porter 5.88 1/3
Stephen Porter 5.88
Elizabeth Porter Scott 5.88
Margaret Porter Scott 5.88
Polly Pickel  5.88 (not sure if this is a Porter)
Polly Porter children by Stephen Porter 23.48
Stephen Porter for Polly Porters children 15.40
This totals to be 68.28 which exceeds a fair share by $15.35.

The payments to John P. Matthews, who was Clerk of the Wythe County Court, totaled $15.48.  However on the worksheet, James Gleaves showed that $16.79 was paid for court fees before the shares were determined.  The difference in these two amounts is $1.31.

George Fisher was a witness to the will probably accounting for his $1.

It has not been determined who Absalom Fisher was and why he was paid $4.

Esther Gleaves Finley and Nancy Gleaves are not listed in this accounting.  See ‘Accounting of his parents’ estates and what is still owed’’ document, letter 515, dated 1855-01-01 where James Gleaves explains their distribution of the estate.
