I, Robert H. Gleaves of the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee being in sound mind and disposeing  memory do make and constitute this my last will and testament .  (Item 1st) My will and desire is that after my death I want all of my just debts paid if any there be out of my property.  (Item 2) I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Mary T. Gleaves all of my bacon, all of my lard, all of my corn and fodder, also one hundred pounds of sugar, sixty pounds of coffee, all of soap and soap grease.  Also my grey mare and one colt, one cow and calf, one sow and seven pigs.  All of the above named property is to go to and belong to my beloved wife Mary T. Gleaves, (Item 3) My will and desire that my wife Mary T. Gleaves shall keep all of my beds, bedsteads and furniture, all of my household and kitchen furniture of every kind as long as she keeps house and keeps my children to wit, James T, Gleaves, Ann R. Gleaves, and Robert G. Gleaves with her, but if my wife Mary T. Gleaves should conclude to not keep house at any time, my will and desire is that all of the above named beds, bedsteads, and furniture together with my household and kitchen furniture with the acception of one bed, bedstead, and furniture which is to go to and belong to my wife Mary T. Gleaves is to be sold to the highest bidder.  (Item 4) I will and bequeath to my children to wit James T. Gleaves, Ann R. Gleaves and Robert G. Gleaves all of my land to be divided equally between them to them and their heirs for ever but at the same time my wife, Mary T. Gleaves is to have a dower in the same land during her natural life.  (Item 5) My will and desire is that all of the residue

of my property of every kind not disposed of in this will to be sold to the highest bidder on a credit of twelve months and after my just debts is all paid my will and desire is that all of the money is to be divided equal between my three children (to wit) James T. Gleaves, Ann R. Gleaves, and Robert G. Gleaves (Item 6) My will and desire is that my children above named shall be educated with the money that may come to them by this will to be used equally between them.  (Item 7) I hereby nominate, constitute, and appoint my beloved wife Mary T. Gleaves and Edmund F. Gleaves my executrix and executers to this my last will and testament this 20th day of March 1853.

Transcriber Notes

This is Robert Hughes Gleaves, son of Elizabeth Wood and James Robertson Gleaves.  He was born 12 Feb 1825 and died 24 Mar 1853 and is buried in Gleaves-Clement Cemetery.  His wife is Mary Terrel Baker Gleaves.  She was born 15 Jun 1826 and died 20 Mar 1909.  She was originally buried in Baker Cemetery, but later moved to Mount Juliet Memorial Gardens when the dam was built.  They married 11 Apr 1844.  Their children were:

  • James Thomas ‘Jim T.’ Gleaves, born 02 Aug 1845; married Lena Martha Parrish 18 Nov 1880; died 02 Sep 1945; buried Gleaves-Clement Cemetery
  • Anna Retta Gleaves, born 09 Sep 1847; never married; died 1862; buried Gleaves-Clement Cemetery
  • Robert Grove Gleaves born 11 Jan 1852; married Alice Brooks 01 Dec 1875; after her death married Mildred Hannie Unknown;  he died 02 Mar 1928; buried Luton’s United Methodist Church Cemetery, Goodlettsville, Davidson, Tennessee
