at this time he had grown a great (d)eal when this reaches you I hope it will find you surrounded with all the luxuries of the present life and what is far better a hope of eternal life for I would not have to forget that we are placed here for some good purpose and to prepare for a better world I want you to wite to me and tell me how much you love me for I would like to hear it but I would rather you would hate me with perfect hatred than to love our Dear Savier with only the same affection you have for me I will now close in a brief maner as paper is growing short with many good wishes for your health and happiness I remain

Your devoted
Aunt Malvina Gleaves

Shall I hear from you soon

Transcriber Notes

It is unknown if this letter was ever mailed.

Infare: a reception or dinner party after a wedding, usually on the day after

The niece that this letter is addressed to is probably the daughter of Malvina’s brother John Crockett.

Sallie Crockett who married Mr. Raper is the daughter of John Stuart Crockett and Margaret Taylor.  She is the granddaughter of Robert Crockett and Jane Lewis Stuart.  She was born about 1851.  Mr. Raper is John Crockett Raper, the son of Robert Raper and Mary Craig Crockett.  John was born in 1834 and is the grandson of John Crockett, Jr and Nancy Agnes Graham.

Uncle Allen is Malvina’s brother Allen T. Crockett

Emeline Porter is the daughter of Stephen Porter and Margaret McNutt.  She was born about 1844 and is the granddaughter of Martha Mary Gleaves and Andrew Porter.  Her great grandparents are William Benjamin Gleaves and Elizabeth Turk.

Bob Gleaves is Malvina’s son, Robert Harvey Gleaves

Aunt Margaret is Malvina’s younger sister who never married

The Cove refers to Crockett’s Cove where Malvina grew up.

Thompson Crockett is the son of John Crockett, Jr and Nancy Agnes Graham.  John Jr. is Malvina’s father’ brother.  Thus Thompson is Malvina’s first cousin.

Newton may be Joseph Newton Crockett, the brother of Thompson Crockett, mentioned above
or
the son of Rufus King Crockett and Jane Peery.  Rufus is the son of John Crockett and Mary Peery.  John is the younger brother of Robert Crockett and the son of Samuel Crockett, Jr. Newton and Malvina are second cousins, once removed.  Malvina’s great grandfather, John Samuel Crockett, is Newton’s great-great grandfather.

Brother John is Malvina’s brother and probably the father of the recipient of this letter

Betsy is probably Malvina’s youngest sister, Elizabeth and she never married.

The remaining names in this letter are unknown.

Charlie Gleaves is Malvina’s grandson, Charles Wythe Gleaves (and the transcriber’s great grandfather!)
