Dear Wythe
I have just returned from Lewisburg which we reached yesterday morning & engaged the enemy about 4,500 to 5,000 strong  our number about 1700 effective men-We fought them gallantly for some time when we were compelled to fall back across Green Briar Bridge which we burnt.  Our loss-killed wounded prisoned & missing about 175.  I think besides leaving 4 pieces of artillary.  Buchanns Co. lost some 10 or 15 men, wounded & missing Henry Browns  Gen Rufus was slightly wounded in the hand-the rest you dont know-our men fought well & bravely  I was in the battle almost but escaped without a hurt or bruise-I have no news except what Bob told you.

I dont know how long we will remain here probably will go back as far as the Narrows.
Write soon   Give my love to Isabelle & show this to Father & Mother & let me know how they are & say to them I have written again & again & have not heard a word from them
Do you think I could make a regiment in South Western Va & make a Colonel-I think I could the latter.  Now what say you about the former?  let me know I am anxious to engage in a more elevated position than Surgeon-

Enclosed you will find an order showing I had the position of Medical Director tendered me-which I resign   I want you to keep this as some may think it was all Buncombe
                    Your Brother
