together - but her time was too
short & she could not leave her
party of course. At all events
I can congratulate you & Aunt
Laura having such a sweet
daughter & hope that the dear
child will some day find
the husband worthy of her.
Belisa will now return to the
States before long & can tell you
all about our meeting herself.
I hope she was as satisfied with
her old cousin as I was with
my young one! One thing I am
sure of & that is that if ever
she returns to Europe she will

dear Dr Charlie,

I wanted to write
to you long ago to tell you
about my meeting with Belisa,
but it was impossible for
me to do so as at first we
had some guests staying
with us & then I went on
a visit to friends.  Yester
day I returned home &

feel sure that
she has relations

the first thing I now do is
to send a few lines to you.
I cannot tell you how pleased
I was to make the acquaintance
of your youngest daughter.
The only member of your family
I did not know. my namesake.
Like the other three, she is a
handsome girl & what is
still better a sweet  girl in
disposition. This at least
was the impression she made
on me! We were good friends
at once & chatted with each

other as if we had been old friends
for years past. I was so sorry
I could not see more of Belisa.
The few hours I had with her just flew
by & the time for parting again
came far too quickly for  -  I
think I may say - both of
us! I should have loved to
have brought Belisa back
with me here to our country
home & to have had her all
to ourselves far a little while,
I am sure we would have
gotten on splendidly

Transcriber Notes

Isabel de los Dolores Bock y Macias was born in 1866 in Havana, Cuba to Isabel de Macias and Gustav Bock. Unfortunately her mother died in child birth.  Later Gustav Bock married Lydia Keene.  Lydia’s younger sister, Laura, married Dr. Charles Wythe Gleaves.

In 1894, Isabel married Baron von Crailsheim in Munich, Germany.

In 1922, Belisa Gleaves, the youngest daughter of Laura Keene and Dr. Charles Wythe Gleaves made a tour of Europe where she met Isabel.  The Gleaves family took the name Isabel and rearranged it to make the name Belisa.

At the time of their meeting, Isabel was 56 years old and Belisa was 29 years old.

Belisa was also called ‘Ber’ and ‘Coxy’ by her family.

Schloss Rügland bei Ansbach means Castle Rügland - in Ansbach

The transcriber of this letter is a descendant of Lydia Keene and Gustav Bock.
