Transcriber Notes

William Orr was the husband of Polly Rutherford, who was the daughter of Randolph Rutherford (c. 1758-1841) and the sister of Calvin. Randolph died in January, 1841, and his estate was sold at auction, the proceeds being distributed among his widow, Mary (the “oald” woman mentioned in this letter), and children.

William Orr mailed this letter at Athens, the county seat of neighboring McMinn County. Polk County is located in the Appalachian Mountains in southeastern Tennessee. Copper mining was carried on there extensively in the 19th century. Bentonville is now Benton, the county seat.
