In the name of God Amen
I James T. Gleaves Senior, of the County of Wythe and the State of Virginia being of sound mind and disposing memory and knowing the certainty of death and the uncertainty of life and being desirous of arranging my temporal affairs do on this 24th day of January in the year 1862 make my last will and testament as follows revoking all others made by me.
1st It is my will after it has pleased God to call me hence that my funeral expenses and all of my just debts be paid out of any money on hand or arising from the sale of my property.
2nd I give to my beloved wife Malvina during her life the house in which we now live together with any other buildings that she may choose for her use and her thirds in all my lands if she chooses to take it and any beds and furniture for the same that she may want to keep and all other household and kitchen furniture that she wants. All of this except what hereafter I will give to my sons which I will hereafter name. I give to her one waggon and four horses of her choice and harness for same. I also give her my Chatwell filly, also twenty head of cattle, her choice. I give her my blacksmith tools the carriage and harness, fifty head of hogs her choice and forty head of sheep. I also give her my negro man Perry to dispose of to my sons as she may think proper not wishing him to go out of the family.
I also give to her during her lifetime the following negroes: old Sampson, Reuben, Edmund, Sarah Charley, Maria and young Sampson. I give to her as much grain and forage that may be on hand or in growth at my death that she may wish to keep and such of my farming utensils as she may cause to keep.

3rd I give to my son Samuel C. Gleaves in addition to what he has received my negro boy Creed also two thousand dollars a part of the proceeds of a note executed by me by Jno W. Green Jr. due the first day of September 1863. Also a negro woman Mary Jane formerly belonging to my son James T. Gleaves Junior.
4th I give to my son George Wythe Gleaves in addition to what he has received all of my land lying West of a line commencing at two chestnut sprouts on a line between Michael Spraker land and mine a little East of the old Creger house and running a South course to the end of a fence leading to the middle gate and a to a white oak near said gate and crossing branch with a fence and with the same a West course to Patton's Spring and thence up the hill with fence to locust sprouts marked as corner thence a West course meeting a fence that he made and with that fence and mine to a small branch and down the middle of same to its junction with Henley's branch and crossing the latter to the nearest point of the line between William Davis and myself known as Percival tract. Also my negro man Rufus and little girl Kesiah (Kissey?) to receive them at any time after my death that my wife may think proper.
5th I give to my son Robert H. Gleaves all of my lands South and West of a line commencing at a white oak marked as a corner on a line between William Davis and myself (near the marsh) and running an east course to a double white oak marked as a corner about forty five poles North of Phillip Yance's spring thence a strait line on east course to the top of the middle ridge crossing the branch one hundred yards below a line kiln(?) on Gleaves branch thence a strait line on east course crossing an hollow to the top of grape ridge on the

Line between Jno W. Green Jr. and myself. I now give him ten head of cattle fifteen hogs fifteen head of sheep two beds and accompany furniture for same. I give him my negro man Rush and my Negro woman Victoria. At my death also my negro man Ephriam and my girl Maria and Sally at any time my wife may choose to give them up.
6th I give to my son Andrew Jackson Gleaves all my lands not otherwise disposed of which he is to have when he is to have when he is twenty one years of age, subject to his mother's claim, two beds and necessary furniture for same. I give him also my negro woman Malinda and her three children, Jane Worth and Wythe and her future increase; Also Edmund formerly the property of my son James T. Gleaves Jr. and when twenty one years of age I allow him to have my negro boys Dallas and Charley and after the death of his mother it is my will that he have my negroes namely, Old Sampson, Ruben, Edmund, Sarah and Young Sampson and my stock in the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad, ten head of cattle, twenty head of hogs, fifteen head of sheep and my gray filly and a colt of old Buf, also a wagon and four horses and harness and the necessary tools and implements for farming, my blacksmith tools and my threshing machine. I allow to remain on my plantation subject to the use of my wife, Wythe, & Robert and at her death I allow Jackson to have it. I allow Jackson to have a bridle and saddle when eighteen years of age to be paid out of the proceeds of the farm. In case Jackson should die before twenty one years of age then it is my will that Robert have the land that I have given him and the land I have given Robert to be sold and after paying him Robert for any improvement that he may have made, the proceeds of the sale to be equally
