divided between Samuel, Wythe and Robert and the negroes willed to Jackson be equally divided between Samuel, Wythe and Robert and none of them sold.
I give my son Jackson at the death of his mother my desk and bookcase and my books to be equally divided between my four sons, Samuel, Wythe, Robert and Jackson
I give to Betsy Welsh a horse with seventy five dollars and a good cow.
My wife Malvina having an inherited right or otherwise to some negroes that was the property of Elizabeth Crockett deceased and them being six of the negroes to wit Mary Adeline Albert Frank Esther and Carolina and their future increase now living with me and in my possession and others should they be obtained not in my possession. It is my will that after the death of my wife that they be equally divided according to valuation between all of my children.
It is my will that after my death my executrix and executor sell all of my property not otherwise disposed of at a credit of twelve months and the money after complying with ever(y) acquisition of this my last will be equally divided between all my heirs. And lastly I constitute and appoint my wife Malvina my executrix and my son Samuel my executor to this my last will and testament.

Being desirous of making a change in this will I enter this as a codicil to this may last will and testament
I give and bequeath to my son Samuel C. Gleaves in addition to what I have given him heretofore five hundred dollars to be paid out of a note I hold against John W. Green which is due in 1864.
I also give A.J. Gleaves (my son) five hundred dollars to paid out of a note I hold against John W. Green due in 1864.

This Last Will and Testament of James T. Gleaves Senr. Deceased with a codicil thereto annexed was presented in Court proved by the oaths of Abner Thompson and Fredrick N. Green Subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded
And on the motion of Samuel C. Gleaves the Executor named in said will who took the oath as prescribed by law and together with George Wythe

Gleaves and Robert H. Gleaves his securities entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of sixteen thousand dollars conditioned as prescribed by law certificate is granted him for obtain(ing) probate in and form. And leave is given to Mrs. Malvina Gleaves the executrix named in said will to qualify hereafter.

Transcriber Notes

 Son James Turk Gleaves Jr. had already died in the Civil War when this will was written. On December 17, 1861, in Winchester, Virginia, James died of fever from exposure.

Andrew Jackson Gleaves was in the Home Guards during the Civil War and died of disease contracted in the line of duty on March 8, 1863 at the age of 17. The lands given to him in his father's will went to his brother Robert.

The identity and relationship of Betsy Welch mentioned in the will is unknown. She received a horse, seventy five dollars and a cow.
