death; cause - chronic gastritis; on Sunday morning, at 3 o'clock, a native of Mississippi, and a resident of this city for the past 30 years. …an old citizen and esteemed gentleman, long a resident of this city. In business circles he was regarded as a man of high character and scrupulously accurate in his dealings. Carondelet street will miss his well known form, for many years an habitue on its flags. To the many friends and relatives we tender our condolence and sympathy. |

Child's Delight, a new illustrated monthly for children, in its first volume from the author, Miss Laura Keene. The magazine is handsomely printed on fine paper, with well ordered matter, exactly suited to young minds. The accomplished editor evinces both tact, and talent in the origination of her subjects, and deserves credit for the good work she proposed, which is to continue the magazine from month to month and put it in book form at the end of each year. The subscription is only $1.10 and no family should be without the Child's Delight |

of 334 North Fremont Street, recently employed by R. S. Strobel of Baltimore, drowned on Monday night by a collision between the yacht Curlew in which he was sailing and the steamer Reeves from Chester river. Capt. Clarence Hollyday commanded the yacht. The accident occurred near Love Point light, about 15 miles from the Seven-foot Knoll at the mouth of Chester river. Thomas Hayward of Easton went to assistance in a yawlboat which yacht had in tow but only one oar. He could make no headway in the rough water. He then called to the captain of the Reeves, and was taken on board. The captain wished to take him to Baltimore, but he objected, and was again placed in the yawlboat. He was subsequently picked up by the yacht. The body of Keene has not yet been recovered. |

Captain W. R. McClellan of the Philadelphia steamer David Reeves, which on the night of August 11, at the mouth of Chester river, was in collision with the yacht Curlew, when Mr. N. B. Keene, on the yacht, was drowned, had made his statement at the Baltimore custom-house. He says the collision was caused by the Curlew changing its course. The night was clear and the breeze moderate. The steamer, he says, had no headway on when the collision occurred. The Reeves picked up one of the crew of the yacht and lay by two hours to render assistance. The local board of steam vessel inspectors will make an investigation. |

The local board of US steam vessel inspectors have found the Philadelphia steamer David Reeves, Capt. W. K. McClellan, responsible for collision with the yacht Curlew. The US district attorney yesterday was furnished with information to process against the steamer for alleged violation of the navigation laws, but no proceeding of that kind has yet been instituted in court. A libel was, however, filed in the US District Court yesterday by Gen. Bradley T. Johnson and John F. Poe for Clarence Hollyday, owner of the yacht Curlew, against the steamer David Reeves, for $3000 damages for injuries to the yacht and bodily injuries to Hollyday from being cast into the water in the collision in the mouth of Chester river. |

Judge Morris decided the cases and awarded $80 damages to the owners of the Curlew; no other was allowed though damages were claimed for the distress, fright or mortal suffering of Mr. Hollyday; and $700 to Mrs. Keene for the pecuniary value of young Keene's services had he lived until he was 21 years old was the basis of the damages allowed Mrs. Keene. |
